Fuji S-12-S Bicycle, NOS lugged steel frame and parts, custom built.
Up for sale is a truly rare find: a classic Fuji S-12-S, new old stock frame with many NOS and touches of modern components, built to Randonneur/Adventure theme
A few years ago, I came across this NOS frame listed on eBay and bought it. It is of late 70’s /early 80’s vintage, and true to the description of the listing, the frame was NEW. Over the past few years I had built it up, with a mix of NOS and modern parts.
Frame:
Fuji S-12-S, lugged, butted chromoly steel, size 51cm, suitable for riders 5’5” to 5’8”. I can provide detailed measurements.
The frame is in pristine condition, no rust, paint is perfect.
Drive train:
I opted for a 2x9 setup (the original was 3x6), Shimano DuraAce bar end shifters 9spd with indexing. Front derailleur is a NOS Suntour unit that’s reverse of modern setup. Rear derailleur is a modern Microshift 9spd long cage unit. Crankset is Fuji, with Sugino compact chain rings 50/34.
Brakes:
I found NOS Dia-Compe side pull brakes with enough reach that fits with my wheel choices (see below).
Wheels/tires:
The original was specified with 27in wheels, I opted for 700c but with big tires. Rims are Velo Orange polished 32 holes. Spokes are DTSwiss Champion, laced 3x. Front hub is a Shimano Deore LX dynamo. Rear hub is a modern Shimano Ultegra unit. Tires are 38mm Panasonic Gravel Kings. Inner tubes are Zipp Tangente.
Cockpit:
Nitto Universiade bar, with Brooks leather bar wrap, Nitto Tectonic stem, SRS seatpost, Brooks B17 saddle
Others:
Lumotec IO LED headlight (very bright, quite nice), Velo Orange rear rack. Silver metallic braided shifter and brake lines
Note to potential new owner:
Size is 51cm, and the geometry is “classic”, i.e. top tube is relatively long, BB is relatively high. I have a tall stem, which helps with reducing the reach. The handle bar is narrow, 38cm, my personal preference. The NOS brakes are WEAK, I changed the front brake pads to a set of Shimano Ultegra which helps. I do have old pads and holders included. I did switch out the old BB with a new cartridge unit with the proper axle length to match the 2x9 chainline. The old BB will be included. The ride is smooth and serene. I am only letting it go because of a. lack of room, b. my better half doesn’t like brown!
