Eddy Merckx Corsa 55cm in excellent condition. Your chance to own a piece of cycling history an example of the first year of production on the new frame tooling that was implemented at the start of the 1981 model year. In order to prepare for an ambitious production run with a larger floor crew the Belgian plant ordered a huge quantity of Reynolds’s 531 tubing along with campagnolo dropouts and frame lugs. Unfortunately there was a continuing workers strike at the Campagnolo factory that affected availability of derailleurs and components especially for bike shops outside of Italy. Merckx and his crew were able to obtain a quantity of OMAS produced Campagnolo licensed parts that could implement production of bikes through the spring of 1981 until the Campy strike was settled in June. This is one of those rare early production bikes with the yellow/black- no background decals, 531 tubing, OMAS headset and BB, Crankset. Super Record rear derailleur and record front. The seat tube is a campy licensed Columbus part and the Concor seat is an original. The mavic wheels are on Record hubs, common upgrade at the time was to add the Modolo racing calipers, other than that the bike is all original save for the 1980’s benotto bar tape. This bike bottom bracket is A5 E3223 which places production in march 1981. Subtracting the 1,500 bikes produced on the old tooling through 1980- this would be 1,723rd bike produced on new tooling in the 1981 model year. All original paint and decals- bought in 2006 from the original owner in San Diego- left untouched except for lubrication and new brake pads. Rides like a dream! Bike was imported and sold to a customer in 1981 at the legendary Rancho Bernardo Schwinn bike shop in San Diego which also sold Moulton and Rechurche and various exotic import bikes.
